Denise Provost promised to be your voice in City Hall...
and she kept the promise!
Dear Neighbors,
Two years ago, when I asked for your votes, I promised to be your voice in City Hall. Since you
elected me your Alderman-at-Large,
I have been that voice. On citywide issues and on
neighborhood concerns, I have listened to you, spoken for you, and
fought for you. And I will keep doing it!
A voice for responsible zoning and community development
On development issues, I have one clear goal:
fighting for the interests of the people of
Somerville and the neighbors affected by development.
For too long, Somerville has had low
expectations of what is possible. At Assembly Square, I have pushed for zoning and development
that would improve the city's commercial tax base, add jobs, and increase open space, while
protecting neighborhoods from unbearable traffic increases.
These higher expectations are
proving to be realistic ones.
I've joined East Somerville residents in fighting for a
re-use of the Somerville Lumber site that
will provide services, jobs and significant tax revenue while avoiding traffic gridlock and protecting
neighborhood businesses.
I've worked with neighbors affected by
questionable building or zoning permits, asking tough
questions about construction over an underground spring on Elmwood Terrace, a petition to store
garbage trucks on Chestnut Street, and a massive expansion of a residence on Hayden Terrace.
I've fought for responsible mixed-use development at the Gray Sales
building on Park Street, at Union Place, and at the Diamond Club site.
A Voice for Responsible Neighborhood Business Practices
Neighbors near Davis Square remember a devastating explosion and fire at
Beacon Ink. I've been fighting poorly regulated, nuisance businesses.
In Ward 5, I worked to close down a business in a residential
neighborhood that operated for years as an unlicensed transfer station
for construction waste and used oil tanks.
I've helped neighbors demanding quiet and cleanliness at a pet
boarding facility in Ward 1.
I helped stop a liquor store from opening in the Davis Square statue
park.
I worked to toughen the city's location and regulation of tattoo
parlors.
I'm working now on getting an illegal towing business out of a
residential neighborhood.
A Voice for a Transportation System that Serves Somerville
I was the only Alderman to attend the public hearing on the
Massachusetts 2002-2007 Transportation Improvement Program. I have been
pushing for the plan to include a T stop at Assembly Square; a Union
Square stop on the Fitchburg commuter rail line; a Green Line extension;
and prompt repair of all Somerville bridges.
I have worked for improved safety and access for elders, children,
and other pedestrians, in neighborhoods, squares and dangerous McGrath
Highway intersections.
I have joined concerned citizens fighting the proposed Logan Airport
expansion and urged that the City join in litigation to oppose the new
runway.
A Voice for Open Space
I've pushed for the creation of neighborhood community gardens on
undersize properties that have come to the City through tax title
proceedings.
I've called for increased open space, landscaping, and natural drainage
requirements for building and development projects.
I have worked for an extension of the Bike Path.
Make Sure Your Voice Continues to Be Heard
I've helped many people in Somerville get information, receive services,
cut red tape, and solve their problems. When you or your neighbors need
help, I'll be there.
Alderman-at-Large
You have a voice in City Hall.
Vote to keep it!
