Ever Wanted a Voice in City Hall?

Dear Neighbor,

Somerville Community News Endorsement

[picture of Denise Provost 2001] What do we want from city government in Somerville?

We want the major services, of course - a good school system, safe streets, public works that work, pleasant neighborhoods to live in.

But we also want to walk into City Hall and get answers to our questions. Have somebody listen when we have a problem. We want to know the city government is there to help us.

We want our voices to be heard when the city affects our lives. Can I get a building permit to put on a deck? Why do my water bills keep going up? Who do I call to get a tree on my street?

We want to have input when the city makes decisions about our neighborhoods. Can we get permit parking on our street? Will a developer be allowed to build a big project here? When will our dilapidated playground get rebuilt?

We want to know what is going on in City Hall, to know that the city is fair and equitable to all. And we want the city to work within a development plan that will bring benefits to Somerville.

Answers. Access. Neighborhood input. Fair dealing. Planning.

I am running for Alderman-at-Large because I believe in responsive and responsible government. Together, our voices will make a difference.

Somerville Community News

November 1999

At-large challenger Denise Provost has been a fighter for good government for years, establishing herself in the city solicitor's office in the Eugene Brune administration of the 1980s. In 1993, Provost did much to revive progressive electoral politics in Somerville when she took on then alderman Joseph Macaluso in Ward 5, the heart of the city's political machine. She lost by less than 60 votes in a race where some "voters" were found to be out-of-town imports. A more decisive but far from embarrassing loss to the formidable Stan Koty in 1995 established her as a progressive who could build a wide voter base. Provost has focused on bringing rational development to the city.... Provost has always been a champion of fair and open government, and will continue to be a solid voice of reform.
